After a really fun, late night out in Hvar last night that included three different bars (Hula Hula, which was a disappointment, plus two other ones whose name we do not know), lots of Coronas, tons of dancing and sweating, meeting some guys from NYC, and a slice of pizza to cap it off, it was a rough go getting up this morning, but we did it. We packed up our suitcases yet again to hit the road (or the sea) for our final destination, Dubrovnik. It was a little over a three hour ferry ride there, which most definitely included a little napping. We eventually made our way to Dubrovnik and to our hotel, which again is super nice. It sits on the beach and had a really nice pool so we are happy campers. It’s a rocky beach too so we will obviously be staying pool side yet again in our free time.
Our hotel is on a really cool strip along the Adriatic with a bunch of other hotels and lots of restaurants and bars, but is about 2 miles from old town so we hopped on the #6 public bus over there. Easy peasy. The bus stops in front of Pile Gate, which was on my list of things to see and basically the entrance to Old Town. As soon as we got off the bus we were blown away by the giant stone city walls. I don’t watch Game of Thrones, which films a lot right here, but I saw the first three episodes like five years ago so this was mildly familiar looking (but I later found out wasn't even filmed here the first season). And it was awesome. We walked through Pile gate and into the old town city center a bit, which is just so full of tourists. We walked down Stradun street (the main Placa) until we hit the sea and the harbor, and then just turned around and went up and down some side streets. There were some beautiful churches and amazing old architecture around there. We also had planned to walk the wall around the grounds today, but it was just so hot and crowded and we felt that we’d enjoy it more if we did tomorrow morning before the heat and crowds increase. So instead, we thought we’d take the cable car up Mount Srd to get a great aerial view of the city. When we got there, we were told it was closed because storm clouds were moving in. We could see the clouds, but didn’t think they’d shut that down so quickly. (FYI It ended up not even raining here for like another three hours) J and I then just figured we’d do it tomorrow after walking the walls because we didn’t want to wait around for something that may not reopen for the day. The last thing we planned to do was go to an area called Lapad. We hopped on the public bus back toward our hotel and figured we’d hop off there to walk around before going back to the hotel pool. When we got off the bus at the Lapad stop, it looked super familiar to us. Little did we know, but soon realized, that we were back where we started our day; our hotel was in the Lapad area. Durrrr. We had no idea and felt like idiots, but it didn’t seem so clear on the map we had. But hey, one less stop to make today and we had walked through it already.
It was around 4:00 at this point so we threw on our bathing suits and went down to the pool and immediately jumped in. We stayed down there about two hours and came in to change real quick before dinner. We grabbed a quick bite near our hotel and just missed the storm, and then came back to just relax, nice and early. Between the late night out last night, the long ferry ride, and the heat and crowds today, we had a pretty mellow day for us. Tomorrow, on our final day (wahhhhh), on what will hopefully be a great night’s sleep, we are going to try and front load all we want to see in the morning so we can have the afternoon to do the pool and/or beach again and soak in our last day in Europe.
